RCP Fugue Part 01

RCP Fugue Part 01

UPDATE:

There seems to be some ongoing confusion about the kid in the Smartman parody, so I changed the art in panels 6 and 7 a wee bit. To wit: He’s annoyed and sarcastic at having his regular multi-grain bread replaced with Smartman’s SMART bread. Who’s Smartman, you might ask? This Powdered Toastman-esque asshole right here. Who does Smartman work for, you might ask? Ostensibly he’s a mascot for a Dempster’s Bakery product, but in fact, he shills for the assholes at Martek Biosciences Corp. Who are the assholes at Martek Biosciences Corp. you might ask? They farm algae for omega-3s, and insert them into all sorts of products, such as infant formula, cereal, bread, cooking oil, and dietary supplements. This ain’t your Momma’s DHA, this is life’sDHA.

And we’re not making this Direct TV shit up. They actually did an Aliens commercial.

END UPDATE.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to marry an entire country? Like, say, Sweden?

  1. James says:

hey that reminds me, anders loves maria concluded recently. it’s set in sweden and drawn in sweden, so that means it was probably pretty good

  2. nathan says:

fever ray is the bees knees. i am so out of the loop with your random commercial parodies. i suck.

  3. James says:

it’s probably us who suck in this case!

almost no one follows the smart bread segment, even after rewrites. the “back to smart” allusions aren’t helping it make sense - in the original commercial, there was a back to school contest, and they changed the word “school” to “smart.” so.. in most cases, when either of them says smart, it’s supposed to mean school. we might end up changing that.

i think what it comes down to is.. he looks too happy in panel 6, while he’s supposed to be sarcastically happy. maybe angry looking eyebrows could fix it.

i also am starting to think that even this explanation could be confusing

  4. Justin says:

The strip and post have been fixed for clarity and made more informative. The Smartman ad campaign isn’t the most well known, and the root of the product gets into some murky biosciences territory.

    Food. Yum.

  5. Krunkmeyer says:

i guess that’s pretty bad, but it beats the hell out of the moron bread i used to eat.

  6. Andy says:

Direct TV also did a commercial featuring a scene from Terminator 2. I guess they just like fucking up my favorite science fiction films.

  7. n10ae says:

mmm algae yogurt, cant wait for the spam version. just to add my $5.50 a loaf, i didnt have any issues reading the smart bread rpc, only thing that threw me for a split second was the cut from direct tv to smart bread, but then, i haven’t had my ’smart’ today either so…
