This is becoming a common phrase around here lately, but if you’re interested in the themes that flow through 1989, you might be interested in the paranormal podcast Paratopia. It’s entertaining, thought provoking, and at times hilarious. They’ve had some great guests give some stellar interviews, including Whitley Strieber, Stanton Friedman, and Greg Bishop. I particularly recommend the Phillipe Mora interview to anyone who was traumatized by the Christopher Walken alien abduction flick Communion. He directed the film, and as it turns out, is a painter and illustrator, with an interest in the surreal and the unusual. As a long time fan of the film, I found the interview quite illuminating.

A spiral in the last panel! Uzumaki homage?
Hrm, perhaps subconsciously. I’m of the same Ukrainian heritage as the director of the film version of Uzumaki. My favorite band is Coil. The spiraling shape will make you go insaaaane.
This turned more cartoonized lately…
