In order to accurately depict these channels, I recorded random segments of them, and then, with the help of “the worst audience participant cirque du soleil ever had,” transcribed it. This transcribing required pausing, rewinding and replaying 3 to 4 second intervals of tape over and over again.
The Tom Cruise crap was relatively easy, cause it was just a mysterious graph being shown. But i’ve heard it enough times now that i’ve still got all those quotes memorized. This Shopping Channel one was different cause there’s more than just a graph on screen. So i had to make sketches for reference, and, in addition, the images had to line up with the dialogue. This required an additional 47 replays. For a measure of the toll this has taken on my sanity, i can tell you that the distaste i used to associate with this shirt has been replaced with ambivalence. Because, although I still hate it, I’ll also miss it a little.

I’d like to add that transcribing the shopping channel text was by far the most difficult task out of the about 10 hours of transcribing I completed - mostly because of the various “uh”s, “um”s, “er”s, and stuttering I had to tease out to get exact transcriptions. It’s relatively easy to transcribe real words, but stuttering, mashed words, and “uh”s are actually hard to pick up because we cognitively gloss them over in normal conversations, etc.
The passage where she’s talking about the “embellishments” and the amber, quartz, and sapphires….by the time I was finished that I wanted to take that @#$@%$ shirt and strangle her sorry ass with it.
Okay, a little irrational, but you would be too if your brain was turned to mush by hours of transcribing random clips of television…..my head is starting to hurt again just reminiscing about it.

I’m just glad he changed the channel so quickly.
He seems to be learning.
